This description is cited from the Proceedings summary:
"Digital games are a significant element in the digital media and information society. They influence the development of media technologies as well as interface design, online social interaction and new evaluation approaches. The game industry develops not only products for leisure, but also for work and learning, with many dimensions in the area of social life, knowledge acquisition and application, gaining of soft skills and of other experiences. Digital games attract researchers from different science fields e.g. sociology, cultural studies, educational theory, psychology, computer science, etc. The Fourth Symposium for Information Design focused on the question of how game based learning environments can motivate and stimulate learners in different situations, and improve learning. It presented didactical and pedagogical issues, as well as actual examples and concrete applications."

Philip Bonanno, University of Malta - Digital Game Based Learning, Fourth Symposium for Information Design, 2. June 2005, Stuttgart Media University

This presentation summarises the findings, as reported in published papers, and discusses current investigations undertaken as part of the research work on the use of Collaborative Gaming for learning.
A preliminary investigation about ‘Patterns of Gaming’ was done to establish the most common gaming devices used, time dedicated for gaming, and most popular games and game genre. The results were interpreted from a Cognitive Neuroscience perspective that disclosed a number of underlying cognitive and motivational gender-related trends.

Michael Begg, Fiona Littleton, Hamish Macleod University of Edinburgh, UK -presented at the Digital Game Based Learning, Fourth Symposium for Information Design, 2. June 2005, Stuttgart Media University

This paper attempts to approach an understanding of the educational importance of games and play from two directions. First, it offers an analysis of the ways in which educational practice can be informed by an understanding of existing digital games as powerful environments for learning. Secondly, it seeks to explore how those steeped in a culture of digital game play might approach their academic study.

Maja Pivec, FH Joanneum, Austria and her "drwarfs" - Digital Game Based Learning, Fourth Symposium for Information Design, 2. June 2005, Stuttgart Media University

The SIG-GLUE community is formatted to provide a world wide communication and exchange platform for game-based learning in the field of universities and lifelong learning. The community could be seen as "knowledge pool" i.e. a resource of guidelines and practical examples that can be taken over thus facilitating the application of game-based learning. In the paper we describe formation process, theoretical background, tools and resources of the SIG-GLUE.

Fourth Symposium for Information Design, 2. June 2005, Stuttgart Media University

On the 2nd of June, modestly and without any extravagant publicity, the fourth symposium for information design nests itself for eight hours in a lecture hall of the Stuttgart Media University. The topic of the meeting, "Game Based Learning", is enticing. Nine lectures deal with game based learning from different theoretical and practical points of view, in quiet agreement that this is the new way of e-learning. The symposium was organized by the course of studies information design of the Stuttgart Media University and the SIG GLUE project consortium. 106 participants visit the symposium and listen to the presentations.
